30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 21

Day 21: Favorite Goofy Anime Character

Humor is a necessity in every medium to make sure that your target audience is entertained. In anime, the whole thing shouldn’t focus on the nit and grit. There should be some sort of character to set the seriousness level down a notch to accommodate to the viewer’s entertainment.

Out of all the anime that I have watched, the one who filled the goofy role best was Mako Mankanshoku from the anime series Kill la Kill.

Mako Mankanshoku is the best friend of the series’ main protagonist, Ryuko Matoi. She has a goofy and energetic personality who gets clingy at times to our main character. Despite any situation, she rarely shows any sort of intimidation and just jumps in headlong without a second thought.

Mako serves as a mediator for every sort of serious situation in this anime series. She is the show’s excuse to dump in all information and lightheartedness when it is needed for the show to progress.

She’s known to interrupt every battle and voices out her own goofy logical statements which end up giving the viewer a good laugh as the battling characters get confused.

Seriously, this character is so fearless and funny she just ignores the possibility of death and just interrupts the entire battle all for her to voice out her opinion or asking questions on what they’re doing.

It’s this attitude of not giving an actual fuck about everything and just making everyone look either dumb or silly gives the viewer a sort of entertainment. She is basically the Jar-Jar Binks done right in this series.

Her background story is quite interesting too. She is poor but despite financial insecurity, she has close ties with her family and cares much for them. This is shown when she decides to operate a “fight club” and succumbs to greed, not for herself, but to provide for her family.

Ryuko makes quick work of this though, as she was possessed by the equipment given by the main villain, Satsuki Kiryuin.

Mako Mankanshoku – best comic relief character of recent times.
