Miandro’s Spotlight is a weekly blog update rounding up what has been happening to the blog such as the latest posts, what’s caught my eye, and what I plan for the near future.
This will be a special edition of Miandro’s Spotlight in which I share my thoughts on some of the upcoming shows for the Winter anime season. Without further ado, let us get on to it.
Violet Evergarden (Drama, Fantasy)
Violet Evergarden will be anime series with drama and fantasy elements. It will be directed by Taichi Ishidate (Kyoukai no Kanata), written by Reiko Yoshida (K-ON!) and animation studio will be Kyoto Animation (Silent Voice).
The story revolves around Auto Memory Dolls: dolls initially created by a scientist to assist his blind wife in writing her novels, and later rented out to other people who needed their services. While the initial function of these Auto Memory Dolls is only to generate voices into text, a second group of people created a company that rented out beautiful talented women who, while having the same function as the original Auto Memory Dolls, also can perform military-related tasks.
Kyoto Animation is pulling all of their resources to get this show popularity both in Japan and worldwide. It was pretty clear when they started advertising in French, English, Korean, and Chinese.
Being Kyoto Animation’s first grand prize winner for their writing contest, Violet Evergarden is garnering a lot of attention and hype in the community. I can’t wait for this show to be airing starting January 11, 2018.
Only Netflix has acquired licensing for this show and as of writing this article, I do not know if they plan to simulcast or hold off the international release in the later parts of the year.
citrus (Drama, Romance)
citrus will be an anime series with drama and romantic elements. It will be directed by Takeo Takahashi (Aki-Sora), written by Naoki Hayashi, and music by Ryo Takahashi.
Yuzu Aihara, a fashionable, spontaneous and fun-loving city-girl, transfers to a new neighborhood and high-school after the remarriage of her mother. More preoccupied with boys and shopping than studying, Yuzu struggles to fit in at the conservative girls’ school and frequently clashes with the student council—specifically Mei Aihara, the hard-working, beautiful but cold student council president. As it turns out, Mei happens to be Yuzu’s new step-sister and Yuzu finds herself having to share a bedroom with a girl she absolutely can’t stand. The series follows the evolution of the relationship between the two girls, with the animosity slowly lessening as the two begin to learn more about each other and confusion growing as Yuzu discovers that she is starting to develop romantic feelings for her new sibling.
I discovered citrus as a manga series being sold in local bookstores. A friend of mine lent me the first volume and I was immediately hooked on this series for its yuri elements (wink wink). If you’re someone who’s into that kind of stuff, this show might be for you.
It will be out on January 6, 2018.
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni (Romance)
Koi wa Ameagari no You ni is an anime series with romantic elements. It will be directed by Ayumu Watanabe (Uchuu Kyoudai and some Doraemon films), animation production by Studio Wit (Ancient Magus’ Bride) and licensing in Amazon.
Akira Tachibana is a soft-spoken high school student who used to be a part of the track and field club but, due to an injury, she is no longer able to run as fast as she once could. Working part-time at a family restaurant as a recourse, she finds herself inexplicably falling love with her manager, a divorced 45-year-old man with a young son.
Found this show from a list of anime airing in the Winter next year. It got me curious when the description stated about a high school student falling in love with her manager. Upon watching the preview, it was beautiful in animation style and showed promise.
Honestly, Wit Studio has really come a long way from Attack on Titan with shows like Ancient Magus’ Bride and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. I am expecting something similar with this show.
The show is airing on January 12, 2018.
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san (Comedy, Romance, Slice of Life)
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san is an anime series with comedic, romantic elements and a slice-of-life. It will be directed by Hiroaki Akagi, written by Michiko Yokote (Shirobako), music by Hiroaki Tsutsumi and animation produced by Shin-Ei Animation (Doraemon).
“If you blush, you lose.”
Living by this principle, the middle schooler Nishikata gets constantly made fun of by his seat neighbor Takagi-san. With his pride shattered to pieces, he vows to turn the tables and get back at her some day. And so, he attempts to tease her day after day, only to find himself victim to Takagi-san’s ridicule again sooner than later. Will he be able to make Takagi-san blush from embarrassment even once in the end?
After looking at the preview video and reading the description for the plot, I guess this show will be my primary rom-com for the season. I believe I saw their PVs playing in the TV station Animax and I could not wait to see what’s it all about.
Those were a few notable shows that I found interesting for this Winter Season of 2018. If you want to find and recommend some other shows to me, feel free to do so in the comments below!
Here’s to an amazing new year full of anime!
