ANIME, DISCUSSION – Throughout the times, settings for anime shows have been getting wilder and interesting as the years go by. Ranging from a deconstruction of the mahou shoujo genre to the concept of clothes being an alien weapon of mass destruction, anime series shines when it comes to putting something new on the table.
The anime series, Shimoneta, does this with its idea of “what if a world existed where the concept of dirty jokes is outlawed?”
So, we ask the question: what if such were the case for us in the real world?
First off, how would a world wherein dirty jokes are outlawed exist?
In the case of Japan, the country has been experiencing a trend in sexual harassment and molestation of women by perverts in public places like trains, buses or whatever location where tight crowds are found.
Perhaps this type of behavior could lead authorities to consider outlawing any form of indecency such as the usage of sexually-suggestive language and dirty jokes.
Although this may be an extreme case scenario, you cannot deny that it is possible what with the high amount of sexual harassment cases reported in the country. So now, we have a country wherein the concept of dirty jokes is outlawed along with other acts of indecency.
Where does Shimoneta reflect in this?
As we understand, if you introduce something new such as an invention or an idea into society, it becomes a norm whether it is a forced idea or an idea ingrained into generation-to-generation over a long period of time.
Once that happens, society will no longer know and hear of anything related to perversion, acts of indecency and, especially for this case, the concept of dirty jokes. But this comes with some heavy results which may prove detrimental in the long run.
Firstly, we would create a society built with ignorance when it comes to important topics such as sexuality, the act of having sex, reproduction education and other related subjects. This would hamper the youth and have them develop a lot of misconceptions in regards to sex.
When this happens, an irresponsible society which does not know the intricacies of reproduction and its results is created. Since Japan is currently experiencing a population decline, this does not help its problem at all.
Secondly, people would have a limited idea on the sensitivity and gravity of these topics. When dirty jokes are uttered, the receiving individual may laugh it off or be slightly disgusted and insulted by your remarks. If the concept of dirty jokes do not exist, then chances are, people would not have ways to feel any sort of threat in regards to their sexuality because they are accepted and not ridiculed.
Why is this such a bad thing?
It means people will be more susceptible and blinded in the idea that they are inherently perfect and they have no fault of any form – which is quite naive and cruel for individuals who have the right to know what other people think about them.
If you take away a burden, chances are that people would not understand the importance and gravity of why sexuality matters to them in the first place. Why choose a sexual preference when there is no challenge and struggle? Therefore, your identity loses its worth or at least, a significant part of it.
In the anime series, Shimoneta, high school students are depicted to have zero knowledge of the act of sex, genitalia and other sexual education matter which is highly important to them so that they may create the next generations of our kind.
Personally, I believe dirty jokes and lust exists in order to trigger the need to reproduce. It is similar to how people view animals in heat but unlike animals, we, people, are able to control our urges and see higher reason and rational thinking before committing such acts.
If something is outlawed, chances are that individuals will become curious about it which has happened in the series’ main characters.
They found out about pornography, sex, dirty jokes and other explicit content which lead to questions and the piquing of curiosity because this is what our senses lead us to: we observe, we question and then we understand at the end.
If the world concepts used in Shimoneta existed in real life, we would have a young generation incapable and naive in understanding the importance of reproduction and sexuality which hampers our view on the worth of reproduction.
